10 Songs I Love: Mary Ward

We recently got together with Mary Ward so she can give us the scoop on what songs we need to check out. Join us as we dive into the songs that have been dominating her playlists, had an impact on her as a musician or songs that bring back wonderful memories.

1. “Daisies” by Katy Perry

I am absolutely obsessed with this song right now. If I need to feel inspired this is the song I listen to first! I love the production and the catchy melodies, but most of all I love the message – that you can do anything you set your mind to, and should unapologetically follow your dreams.

2. “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” by Kate Bush

I discovered Kate Bush last year which is late in the game, but I’ve been in love ever since. To me, this is the perfect 80’s pop song. When listening, you feel so immersed in the music and can’t help but sing along!

3. “If I Hated You” by FLETCHER

This is another song I can’t stop listening to. The production is a mix of current sounds with 80’s nostalgia which I love. FLETCHER’s ability to write such memorable melodies and conversational lyrics always amazes me.

4. “When We Were Young” by Adele

You ever have those songs that just transport you back to a specific time and place, so much that you can even smell it? When I hear this song I’m back in December 2016; driving down winding roads, snow in the trees, crisp winter air all around. If you haven’t heard this gorgeous song, it’s a must. (Just make sure your heart is emotionally ready).

5. “shut up” by Greyson Chance

This song is so much fun, as soon as I hear those opening harmonies I can’t help but smile and feel happy. This song is the definition of carefree, sunsets and long drives, or crazy nights with your best friends.

6. “Kissing Other People” by Lennon Stella

This is a song I wish that I wrote! It’s stunning, from the concept to the vocals to the modern/nostalgic production that I love so much. It’s the perfect “moving on” song that makes you want to dance around your room and sing into a hairbrush.

7. “exile (feat. Bon Iver)” by Taylor Swift, Bon Iver

This song is a tragically beautiful masterpiece, and while I could say a million things about why I love it, I know that the best way to explain is just for you to listen to it. Taylor’s “folklore” album is incredible, but this song is just something else.

8. “in my head” by Ariana Grande

This song is genius. I am a huge Ariana Grande fan and have followed the details of her life/relationships more than I’d like to admit. To the average listener this might sound like just a pop/trap song but it’s really so much more. As a songwriter, I appreciate all the small details, confessions, and emotion that she pours into this song. I love everything she does, but artistically, this one takes the cake.

9. “Stayaway” by MUNA

By this point we know I am obsessed with nostalgic pop production, but to me the best part of this song is the concept. The chorus is simple, she says leaving someone is easy, but the hard part is continuing to stay away. If you’ve ever dealt with a breakup, I promise this song is all of your complex thoughts simplified, and that’s why I love it so much

10. “stupid” by Tate McRae

I first heard this song in a Tik Tok poking fun at people who are obsessed with TJ MAXX, (aka me), and I’ve listened un-ironically ever since. While this song is actually a little somber, it’s such a vibe! A mix of pop/trap with beachy guitar, this song is guaranteed to get stuck in your head.
